Sustainable Travel

“Sustainable travel means finding a way that tourism can be maintained long-term without harming natural and cultural environments. Sustainable travel should minimize the negative impacts of tourism and ideally be beneficial to the area in which it takes place. Sustainable tourism should also maintain a high level of tourist satisfaction and ensure a meaningful experience to the tourists, raising their awareness about sustainability issues and promoting sustainable tourism practices amongst them.”

Tourism is responsible for 10% of the global economy and many communities rely on tourism to survive. However, over tourism is a real and threatening issue. As consumers we need to change the way we travel to ensure there is a world to see for future generations.

As individuals, we can do things like shop locally, use environmentally friendly transportation in destination, clean up after yourself and others i.e. on a beach and avoid the use of single use plastics.

Also, we can make sure we are booking our vacations with travel companies or cruise lines that have solid sustainability plans. Book with a cruise line that has a plan in place to reduce carbon emissions and recycle their waste. Book a safari with a company like Wilderness Safaris that has many partnerships with communities and local conservation initiatives. Book with hotels that hire locals.
